How to write a good Research Proposal? Understanding the Basics

A research proposal is a concise and coherent summary of someone's proposed research. It also sets out the central issues or questions that he\she intends to address. A research proposal should be around 1500-3000 words and can be based on the following sections.

1. Title Page and Abstract of Research Topic

In a research proposal, the Title Page should include the name of the university, the name of the student, the name of the supervisor, the submission date, and most important of all name of the research proposal and research field.

While Abstract part of the research proposal should include an investigation of the problem, research methodology and theoretical or practical orientation of the problem, and expected outcomes and implications of the research topic.

2. Introduction

The introduction to a research proposal should be one or two paragraphs and it is the important first section of the research proposal. Because it will grab the reader’s attention and provide an overview of the research topic.

3. Literature Review

In a Literature Review, the researcher will locate the methodology used for data collection of the research topic, highlights the ideas of the research topic, the plus/negative points of the research topic, and will provide all these readers with an overview of what the experts are saying about the research topic. Literature Review is not only designed to inform the readers about the expert’s perspectives on the research problem but also illustrates why the researcher’s topic in the current time is important.

4. Statement of the Problem

The statement of the problem describes the context for the study and it also identifies the general analysis approach. The statement of the problem conveys information about the research problem that why the researcher needs to research the given topic in the current situation.

5. Objectives of the Research

The objectives of a research topic summarize what is to be achieved by the researcher after the completion of the research and what is expected by the researcher from the research topic. Hence, the objectives of the research topic must be clear, well-defined, and explained to the readers and observers.

6. Research Methodology

This section of the research will include a number of subsections. It describes the type of the study that researcher proposes to do as well as how to do it. The researcher will need to describe his\her participants in the research topic, the data collection procedure and methods used for data analysis, as well as the limitations of the research topic.

Purposes of Research Proposal

The main purpose of the research proposal to the researcher is to convince the reader of his/her research topic and competency. The researcher will try in the proposal to prove that his/her plan for the topic is well clear and the research will be successful.

Another purpose of the research proposal to the researcher is also to convince the readers of the research topic that the problem related to his research is significant and worthy and this research will not be a useless piece of work, but a profound work of the researcher and will be extremely important in the given field of research.
